South Africa Coach Praises 'Amazing' Squad at 2023 Women's World Cup

South Africa defied the odds and clinched a thrilling 3-2 victory against Italy, securing their spot in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup. Coach Desiree Ellis expressed her delight, highlighting the team’s remarkable achievement. Their first-ever win at the finals came through Thembi Kgatlana’s stoppage-time winner, propelling the world’s 54th-ranked team ahead of their opponents, who are 38 places above them as reported by Modern Ghana.

Ellis praised her squad, acknowledging their relentless efforts and resilience, emphasising that it was a personal triumph for the hardworking players. She conveyed her gratitude to everyone back home who supported the team and shared in their disappointment after the game against Argentina.

The team’s clinical striker, Hildah Magaia, known as the “breadwinner,” played a crucial role in their success. Her goals in their 2-1 win over hosts Morocco in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final and against Italy showcased her importance to the team. Magaia’s contributions have provided hope and joy to the nation. Reaching the first knockout stage means increasing prize money, allowing her to support her family and care for her mother, a responsibility she takes seriously.

Ellis also commended goalkeeper Kaylin Swart and the team’s strategy, which allowed them to overcome challenges and press Italy when necessary. The coach emphasised the team’s determination and the need to give their all, which ultimately paid off with this remarkable victory.
