For Nicky van der Walt, the founder of MIRAMAR Collection, which owns TANG Sandton, TANG V&A Waterfront, and Mirabelle Vineyards, this award is a testament to the dedication of the chefs and hospitality staff at TANG. The international acknowledgement, Van der Walt notes, reflects the high standards and world-class culinary experiences consistently delivered by the TANG team.

Since its opening in May 2021 at Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square, TANG Sandton has become a fixture in Johannesburg’s culinary scene. The restaurant, designed by Tristan du Plessis, offers a contemporary and elegant ambience complemented by the creative cuisine of Group Executive Chef Vixa Kalenga.

At TANG, guests embark on a culinary journey across Asia, experiencing a refined pan-Asian dining menu. The selection of small plates, known as ‘Izakayas,’ introduces patrons to various flavours, from soft-shell crab in black pepper soya to Wagyu robatayaki. Each dish reflects an elevated interplay of flavour and texture, showcasing Kalenga’s culinary creativity.

TANG’s commitment to authenticity is evident in its pan-Asian approach, staying true to each dish’s country of origin. The kitchen team works diligently to honour and respect time-honoured culinary traditions, ensuring a genuine and immersive dining experience.

TANG Sandton’s inclusion in the TOP 100 Restaurants of the World 2023 list marks its second major international award this year. In October, TANG V&A Waterfront received recognition as Africa’s Best New Restaurant at the World Culinary Awards. Looking ahead, TANG will make its mark on the international culinary scene with the opening of TANG Dubai in September 2024, which will be located in the prestigious Palace Downtown Hotel and offer breathtaking views of the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain.
