After an impressive 2024 season, Diggers Rugby Club is preparing for an exciting new chapter in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge (PGC). The club’s senior team, which dominated the Castle Lager Senior Grand Challenge (SGC) and earned promotion, is ready to compete at the highest level of club rugby in Gauteng.

The PGC is known for its fiercely competitive teams, including top clubs and universities, and Diggers are eager to take on the challenge. Andrew Collison, Diggers’ chairperson, shared the team’s goals for the upcoming season. “Our aim is to finish mid-table across all five teams,” Collison explained. “We hope to be competitive in each match, and we’re excited to take on the best clubs Gauteng has to offer.”

With the team stepping up to face some of the league’s toughest competition, Diggers is welcoming a host of new players to strengthen the squad. The club has seen significant interest since moving to the PGC, including a large group of U18s joining from their junior section.

“We believe we can truly accommodate a wide variety of players as a true community club,” Collison said. “We welcome anyone looking to elevate their game with us.”

The 2025 season is expected to be the most challenging yet for Diggers, with clubs aiming for gold cup status. Collison acknowledged the tough road ahead but remains optimistic. “It’s going to be another level altogether. We’ll need a higher rugby IQ to compete, and the players are excited for that challenge.”

Although their first training session was rained out, the preparations are going well. Players have been committed to their off-season training, and the club has lined up three pre-season friendlies with local clubs, plus trials scheduled for February 15. “The players look ready for the hard work ahead,” Collison remarked.

As the club moves forward, no player has been selected for the senior team yet. Collison emphasized the importance of merit-based selection, stating that positions will be decided based on practice attendance, skill, and commitment to the club’s values.

With a promising season ahead, Diggers Rugby Club is ready to prove their worth in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge and continues to build on its legacy of dedication, hard work, and community spirit.
