Springboks Hit by Injuries – Is It Time for a Ruan Ackermann Recall?

Published

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus may be forced to rethink his plans for the 2025 season following injury blows to key loose forwards Jasper Wiese and Elrigh Louw. With both sidelined, the door is now open for emerging talent and overlooked overseas players to stake a claim for national selection.

Earlier this year, Erasmus held a virtual alignment camp with a group of 26 players—mostly based abroad. While there were no major surprises in that initial squad, circumstances have since shifted.

Louw was already ruled out for the year with a serious leg injury. Wiese’s absence, confirmed this week after a neck injury, further complicates the Springboks’ depth at loose forward.

Time for fresh faces – and familiar names abroad

With two regulars out of the mix, attention now turns to the likes of young standouts Ruan Venter and Cameron Hanekom. However, there are also a few overseas-based players who may now come into serious contention.

Among them is Ruan Ackermann, a standout performer at Gloucester since his departure from the Lions in 2017. Despite being eligible to represent England, Ackermann has never received a call-up and has remained open about his desire to play for the Springboks. At 29, his form and experience could now work in his favour.

Another name back in the spotlight is Juarno Augustus. Once crowned Player of the Tournament at the 2017 World Rugby U20 Championship, Augustus has struggled with consistency in recent years. But a successful stint at Northampton Saints—and a recent move to Ulster—suggests he may be ready to reignite his national ambitions.

Could Erasmus look to France for more firepower?

One other player who could benefit from the current situation is Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg. The lock/flanker hybrid has just one Springbok cap to his name from 2021, but his performances for French club Montpellier have kept him on the selectors’ radar.

Now 30 and with a wealth of experience under his belt, Janse van Rensburg could be a useful option in the months ahead, especially if Erasmus is looking for proven depth as the Boks build toward the next big international window.

With several gaps to fill and form peaking at the right time for a few forgotten names, Erasmus may soon be adding a few surprises to his Springbok squad.
