MPs Dianne Kohler Barnard and Fadiel Adams Hit Back at Mkhwanazi Misconduct Claims

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Dianne Kohler Barnard and National Coloured Congress MP Fadiel Adams have rejected serious misconduct allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi accused Kohler Barnard of inciting attacks against the Crime Intelligence unit and claimed Adams accessed classified intelligence recklessly. His comments were made at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.

Kohler Barnard Rejects Allegations

Speaking to IOL, Kohler Barnard called the accusations “outrageous, defamatory, and baseless.”

She said she is considering whether to formally respond to the commission with evidence.

According to her, Mkhwanazi’s claims ignore the fact that her concerns about Crime Intelligence properties were already public knowledge:

  • On February 17, 2025, national newspapers reported on properties purchased by Crime Intelligence.

  • She then wrote to the Inspector General of Intelligence requesting an investigation into irregular procurement procedures.

Kohler Barnard stressed that as a former member of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence (JSCI), she is bound by rules of confidentiality and has never leaked committee information.

“For it to be suggested by General Mkhwanazi that I was somehow part of a criminal syndicate is absurd,” she said.

Concerns About Motives

Kohler Barnard questioned Mkhwanazi’s motives for singling her out.

“If he can be wrong on this, how many wrong things has he said?” she asked, adding that the claims have damaged his own credibility.

She noted that while she has faced political attacks during her 21 years in Parliament, being linked to criminality was unacceptable.

“I’ve spent 21 years formulating laws and working for their implementation. For him to say this about me is outrageous,” she said.
