Two dead, 15 injured after minibus taxi collides with cars in Greenwood Park

Chaos on the streets: paramedics describe scene

A routine afternoon turned tragic in Greenwood Park, KwaZulu-Natal, when a minibus taxi ploughed into two cars just before 5pm on Monday, leaving two men dead and 15 others injured.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson described the scene as “chaos and carnage.” Paramedics from multiple services rushed to the intersection of Chris Hani and Effingham Road.

“Paramedics found a pedestrian, a man in his thirties, and one of the drivers, in his forties, critically injured. Despite efforts to stabilise them, both went into cardiac arrest and passed away on the scene,” Jamieson said.

Dozens caught in the aftermath

The crash did not only claim two lives. Around 15 other occupants of the vehicles sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious. They were stabilised on site before being transported to hospitals in Durban. The exact sequence of events leading to the crash remains under investigation, with SAPS actively probing the cause.

KwaZulu-Natal’s growing road tragedy

Unfortunately, this latest incident is not isolated. KZN has been grappling with a surge in road accidents, particularly involving minibus taxis, which remain a staple of public transport but are often involved in high-risk collisions.

  • Last week, five pupils tragically died in Imbali Township when a Toyota Siyaya taxi lost brakes on the T22 road, veering off and striking a pre-school.

  • 15 September, a truck ploughed into multiple vehicles near Peacevale on the N3, catching fire, though the driver escaped.

  • 14 September, seven people died in a series of accidents along the N2 between Chaka’s Rock and Mandeni, including pedestrian fatalities and a head-on collision.

Residents and commuters have voiced concern on social media about the frequency of these incidents. “It feels like every week there’s another crash,” one local Facebook user wrote. “Something needs to change to keep our roads safe.”

A call for vigilance and enforcement

Road safety experts warn that minibus taxis, combined with overworked drivers and poorly maintained vehicles, create a volatile mix. “The public needs stricter enforcement, regular vehicle inspections, and driver training,” one safety advocate told local media.

For families in Greenwood Park, Monday’s crash is a stark reminder of the fragility of life on busy roads. As investigations continue, authorities urge drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and for commuters to remain alert in high-traffic areas.

While SAPS investigates, emergency services continue to underscore the importance of rapid response. The community’s hope is that this tragedy will spur renewed attention to road safety in KZN, particularly regarding minibus taxis that carry dozens of passengers daily.
