A sense of disbelief gripped the community of Daveyton on Friday morning after a deputy principal from Dinoto Technical Secondary School was shot outside the school gates. The attack, which took place just as the educator arrived for the day, has left both staff and learners shaken.

A Morning Of Chaos In Daveyton

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the deputy principal was ambushed outside the school premises and sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care.

Police have since launched a full investigation, while education officials have deployed trauma counsellors and district support teams to the school to help learners and teachers process the ordeal. Despite the terrifying events, matric learners continued with their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams under heightened security.

MEC Chiloane Condemns The Attack

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed outrage, calling the shooting a senseless act of violence that has no place in schools.

Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. We are deeply shocked and condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms,” said Chiloane.

He extended heartfelt wishes for the deputy principal’s recovery and urged police to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.

Fear And Frustration In The Community

Local residents and parents have expressed anger and fear on social media, calling for stronger school security and an end to violence targeting educators. Many described the deputy principal as a dedicated teacher and mentor who played a vital role in the community.

“Teachers risk their lives every day just to educate our children. This shouldn’t be happening,” one Facebook user wrote.

A Growing Concern In South African Schools

The incident adds to a worrying pattern of school-related violence across South Africa. In recent years, educators have reported increasing threats, burglaries, and attacks both inside and outside school grounds.

Community leaders in Ekurhuleni have called for urgent interventions, including police patrols near schools and counselling programmes for traumatised learners.

As investigations continue, one message remains clear schools must once again become the safe havens they were meant to be.
