A Cry For Support From Pretoria

Sudan’s ambassador to South Africa, Osman Abufatima Adam, has made an emotional appeal for solidarity, calling on the South African government to support Sudan’s pursuit of justice against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria, Adam said the RSF has waged a brutal campaign of violence, looting, and sexual assault against civilians since the war erupted in 2023.

The ongoing conflict between the RSF and Sudan’s regular army has torn the country apart, leaving more than 12.5 million people displaced and tens of thousands dead. What began as a power struggle between military factions has spiraled into one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

Linking The Conflict To Foreign Influence

Ambassador Adam accused the United Arab Emirates of supplying arms and resources to the RSF, claiming that ammunition used in attacks could be traced to the UAE and other Western nations. “This war continues because of foreign involvement,” he said, urging African unity in resisting outside interference.

The allegations have reignited debate about foreign fingerprints in African conflicts, echoing concerns across the continent about external powers fuelling instability for strategic and economic gain.

South Africa’s Role In African Justice

Adam’s call carries moral weight for South Africa, a country known for its peacebuilding legacy and its leadership within the African Union. He appealed for South Africa to take a firm stance against “any bordering government structures” created by the RSF, and to help rebuild Sudan’s devastated infrastructure through development and humanitarian assistance.

For Pretoria, the appeal presents a test of diplomatic principle whether South Africa will step into a stronger leadership role in mediating African conflicts, as it once did in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Growing International Concern

Recent satellite imagery has shown mass graves in El-Fasher, a city captured by RSF forces after an 18-month siege. The images, part of independent academic research, have horrified observers and renewed calls for a ceasefire to allow food, medicine, and humanitarian aid to reach civilians.

The RSF has since agreed to a temporary ceasefire proposed by mediators, but scepticism remains high amid reports of continued clashes.

A Call For African Solidarity

As Sudan’s war drags into its third year, its people continue to bear the unbearable. The ambassador’s words in Pretoria serve as both a plea and a reminder that African nations, especially South Africa, hold the moral and historical weight to influence peace.

If South Africa responds, it could reaffirm its standing as a beacon of justice and reconciliation on a continent still battling the ghosts of foreign interference and internal strife.
