A School in Mourning: Tembisa Community Devastated After Fatal Shooting at Inxiweni Primary

Tembisa is reeling from a tragedy that unfolded where children should feel safest, inside their own school. On Tuesday evening, two women, a beloved principal aged 58 and a 55-year-old administrative staff member, were shot and killed inside the administration block of Inxiweni Primary School.

What was meant to be a quiet late afternoon of preparation for an upcoming staff meeting turned into a nightmare that teachers and families will carry with them for a long time.

A Violent Shock at the End of the School Day

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the shooting happened at around 5pm when several staff members were still on the school grounds. Colleagues in a nearby office told officials they were startled by sudden gunshots, the kind of sound no educator ever expects to hear at work.

In fear, they hid until the danger seemed to pass. When they finally stepped into the passage, they found the bodies of the principal and administrator lying on the floor.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but both victims were declared dead at the scene.

Police have opened an investigation, but by Wednesday morning, the identity of the shooter and the motive remained unknown.

Leaders Visit the School as Grief Sets In

As news spread through Tembisa, shock rippled across WhatsApp groups, community forums, and social media. Many locals expressed heartbreak and disbelief, noting how deeply involved the principal had been in the school’s day-to-day life.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane arrived at the school later that evening. They met with the victims’ families, offering condolences and assuring them that the province would support them during this devastating time.

“This was a senseless and brutal act committed inside a school, a place meant to be a sanctuary for teaching and learning,” said Chiloane.

Support for Traumatized Staff and Learners

The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that trauma support teams will be on-site from Wednesday. These include district officials, psychologists, counsellors, and employee wellness practitioners who will assist both learners and staff.

Given the sensitive location of the shooting, experts say psychological support will be critical. Many learners at Inxiweni Primary walk past that administration block every morning a daily reminder of what happened.

A Tragic Pattern in South Africa’s Schools

While school shootings are not common in South Africa in the way they are in some countries, violence spilling into school grounds has become an increasingly worrying trend. From robberies to interpersonal disputes, schools have not been immune to the broader safety challenges facing communities.

Locals on social media expressed frustration, saying educators are expected to perform miracles in environments that are not always secure. “Teachers already deal with so much,” wrote one Tembisa parent on X (formerly Twitter). “Now they aren’t even safe at work.”

Calls for Answers and Justice

As police continue their investigation, the community is demanding answers. Who would target a school? Why these two women? And how did someone with a firearm manage to enter the premises?

For now, the focus remains on supporting the families and the school community. But as the shock gives way to anger, the Tembisa community and Gauteng as a whole is calling for urgent action to ensure that no school ever becomes a crime scene again.
