Pressure Mounts as ‘Cat’ Matlala Dragged Back to Testify Despite Desperate Bid for Delay

When Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s lawyers tried, at the eleventh hour, to push his testimony to a later date, many South Africans watching the saga unfold simply sighed: “Of course he wants more time.”
But for the Ad Hoc Committee overseeing one of the most explosive probes in the country, there would be no more waiting.

On Wednesday, the controversial businessman is expected to finally face the committee, from prison after his legal team’s plea for a postponement was shut down.

The Last-Minute Scramble: ‘Impossible to Prepare in Prison’

Matlala’s lawyer, Matlhatsi Abram Madira, painted a grim picture of trying to prepare a witness locked inside C Max Prison.

With piles of documentation and spotty network coverage, he described the conditions as “virtually impossible” for proper legal consultation. According to Madira, the lack of meeting spaces and severe communication difficulties in the prison have left Matlala confused, stressed and mentally strained.

He went further:
“Yesterday, we could pick up that he no longer comprehends some of the issues and seemed disorientated.”

The defence argues that Matlala’s health has taken a knock since his detention a similar concern raised in earlier bail attempts.

But Parliament Says: Testimony Must Proceed

Despite the urgent request, committee chair Soviet Lekganyane confirmed the hearing will go ahead this time inside Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, specially arranged to accommodate Matlala’s incarceration.

“We are here this week to feature Matlala in our proceedings,” Lekganyane said, signalling that the committee is running out of patience.

Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo backed the decision, assuring Parliament that everything had been set up to make the proceedings “very comfortable,” even joking that MPs might enjoy it enough to “extend their time here.”

Why Matlala’s Testimony Matters: The Mkhwanazi Bombshell

Matlala is expected to respond to allegations raised by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who shocked the country by pointing to:

  • Criminal infiltration in state structures

  • Corruption within the police

  • Political meddling in sensitive investigations

The committee is working through a list of high-profile witnesses in Gauteng, each expected to shed light on networks allegedly manipulating SAPS tenders and influencing top-level policing decisions.

For many South Africans, this hearing feels like a rare moment where the curtain is finally being pulled back on the murky web of politics, police power and big money.

Who Is ‘Cat’ Matlala? A Man at the Centre of Too Many Storms

Matlala is no stranger to controversy and the public knows it.

South Africans on social media have been blunt:

  • “This guy’s name pops up in every shady tender story.”

  • “If Parliament wants answers, keep the pressure on.”

  • “He’s been dodging accountability for years.”

His reputation took another blow earlier this year when he was arrested for allegedly arranging the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane.

He was denied bail and remains behind bars.

But the case that cemented his notoriety in the public imagination is his alleged link to the R2 billion looting scandal at Tembisa Hospital, a corruption web many believe epitomises the collapse of public healthcare governance.

Add to that allegations of involvement in SAPS tender rigging, benefiting criminal syndicates tied to political and police heavyweights and suddenly, his testimony becomes a national event.

A Looming Showdown

Wednesday’s hearing, held inside a prison, is highly unusual and symbolic of the gravity of the claims.

While Matlala’s legal team maintains that his mental and physical condition is deteriorating, Parliament seems determined to keep the process moving, perhaps fearing yet another cycle of delays.

This is no ordinary witness.
This is a man whose name keeps surfacing in cases involving money, power, violence, and the inner workings of the state.
And whether he answers fully, reluctantly, or through legal manoeuvring South Africa will be listening.

A Fresh Take: What This Moment Says About South Africa Right Now

The fact that Parliament must conduct a high-stakes hearing inside a prison cell is telling.

It reflects:

  • the growing entanglement between organised crime and state structures,

  • the difficulty of securing cooperation from key players, and

  • the desperation of institutions trying to regain public trust.

For a country tired of endless commissions and no consequences, this testimony feels different. It’s raw. It’s messy. It’s happening in real time, behind prison walls.

And it may just force open a chapter many have long suspected but never seen fully exposed.

The nation now waits to hear what the man known as “Cat” elusive, controversial, and deeply embedded in some of the state’s most troubling scandals, has to say.

Whether he purrs, claws back, or stays silent… this week’s testimony may shift the political temperature in ways we haven’t yet imagined.
