Chaos on the N2: CIT Vehicle Blown Up, Residents Scramble to Loot Cash in KZN
A cash-in-transit heist on the N2 highway near Chesterville, KwaZulu-Natal, descended into public chaos on Monday evening when hundreds of residents swarmed the scene to loot scattered money after suspected criminals bombed the security vehicle. The brazen robbery has forced the complete closure of the major highway as police investigate.
According to Advanced Life Support paramedics, authorities were called to the scene around 7 PM. Upon arrival, they found a scene of pandemonium. “Paramedics arrived… to find hundreds of members of the public looting money on the ground,” said ALS spokesperson Garrith Jamieson. South African Police Service (SAPS) officers had to first disperse the crowd before medical teams could reach the two security guards who were in the vehicle during the attack.
Guards Injured in Explosion, Public Seizes Opportunity
One guard sustained minor to moderate injuries from the explosion used to breach the vehicle and was treated on the scene. The second guard was assessed but did not require extensive medical attention. Their conditions underscore the violent methodology of the robbers, who used explosives to access the cash.
The subsequent looting by passersby and local residents highlights a disturbing trend where major crimes become opportunistic free-for-alls, complicating police investigations and evidence collection. The scene transitioned rapidly from a targeted armed robbery to a public scramble, with looters undeterred by the presence of the blasted vehicle and injured guards.
Major Route Closed, Investigation Underway
The N2 northbound has been completely shut down by SAPS and Metro Police to allow for a full forensic investigation. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes indefinitely.
An investigation is now underway to piece together the events leading up to the robbery and to identify the perpetrators. However, with cash scattered and looted by the public, the task for investigators has become significantly more challenging. The incident lays bare not only the audacity of CIT syndicates but also the fragile social order that can break down in moments of criminal opportunity.
