South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers deployed along the Limpopo River have successfully recovered a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser valued at R1,513,300after its occupants fled into the water and left the vehicle behind.

According to a statement from the SANDF, members of the 1 South African Tank Regiment, operating under Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, spotted the vehicle on 8 February 2026 attempting to cross the river, which was full at the time.

Upon noticing the soldiers, the occupants allegedly fled to the opposite side of the river. The SANDF members guarded the vehicle until 17 February 2026, when resources became available to retrieve it from the water.

Stolen in Boksburg

After circulating details with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the vehicle was confirmed as having been reported stolen in Boksburg, Gauteng, on 6 February 2026just two days before it was spotted at the border.

A Second Recovery

In a separate incident, a Toyota Fortuner valued at R539,900 was confiscated at Gumbu along the South Africa–Zimbabwe border.

Both vehicles have been handed over to SAPS for further investigation.

Vigilance at the Border

The SANDF said its members deployed in Limpopo remain “extremely vigilant” as they continue border safeguarding operations. The recovery of high-value stolen vehicles highlights the dual role of border deployments: not only preventing illegal crossings but also disrupting cross-border criminal networks involved in vehicle theft and smuggling.

The Bigger Picture

Vehicle theft and smuggling remain significant challenges in South Africa, with luxury 4x4s like the Land Cruiser and Fortuner particularly sought after by criminal syndicates operating across borders. The Limpopo River, which forms a natural boundary between South Africa and Zimbabwe, is a known smuggling routenot only for vehicles but for goods, cash, and people.

The SANDF’s success in this instance sends a message: even in the river, there is no hiding from the soldiers on the bank.
