Record Fuel Price Increase Hits South Africa

South Africans are preparing for one of the biggest fuel price increases on record. From April 1, petrol and diesel prices are set to surge, placing pressure on households and businesses across the country.

Early data from the Central Energy Fund shows sharp increases, with no confirmed relief from government at the time of writing.

What You Will Pay at the Pump

If no intervention is announced, the expected increases are steep:

  • Petrol 93 Unleaded: up by about R5.31 per litre
  • Petrol 95 Unleaded: up by about R5.82 per litre
  • Diesel 500ppm: up by about R10.13 per litre
  • Diesel 50ppm: up by about R10.27 per litre

This pushes petrol prices to around:

  • R25.50 per litre at the coast for 95
  • R26.33 per litre inland
  • R25.71 per litre for 93 inland

Diesel prices could climb even higher. Wholesale 50ppm diesel is projected near R28.32 at the coast and R29.08 inland, before retail margins are added.

Taxes Add More Pressure

The recent budget introduced further increases:

  • General Fuel Levy: +9 cents
  • Carbon Levy: +5 cents
  • Road Accident Fund Levy: +7 cents

That adds another 21 cents per litre on top of already high prices.

Why Prices Are Rising Fast

The main driver is global oil prices. The ongoing Middle East conflict pushed Brent crude up by about 38 percent in one month. Prices jumped from around $69 to $95 per barrel.

At the same time, the rand weakened, making imports more expensive. Together, these factors created a large under-recovery in fuel pricing.

Government Yet to Act

A cabinet committee was set up to review the situation. Calls for a temporary fuel tax cut have grown louder, but no official decision has been announced.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is expected to confirm final prices soon.

Impact on Daily Life

The fuel price increase South Africa faces will hit fast and wide:

  • Transport costs will rise
  • Food prices will increase due to higher delivery costs
  • Small businesses will face tighter margins
  • Inflation pressure will build across the economy

Diesel costs matter most here. It powers trucks, farms, and supply chains. When diesel rises, prices across the economy follow.

What to Expect Next

The fuel price increase South Africa is seeing now could shape the months ahead. Higher inflation may limit interest rate cuts and slow economic recovery.

For now, consumers face a simple reality. Filling up will cost far more from April, and the ripple effects will reach almost every part of daily life.
