DMPR: Rustenburg zama-zama deaths happened inside area with valid mining permit

The Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum (DMPR) has confirmed that the deaths of suspected illegal miners in Rustenburg occurred within the boundaries of an area where a valid mining permit has been issued.

What happened

At least 14 suspected illegal miners died after a collapse at an abandoned mine shaft in Nkaneng on Tuesday, 10 August 2026. Provincial police said several others were believed to be injured and that search and rescue operations were underway for some who may still be trapped underground.

Location and operations

Provincial police commissioner Arthur Peter Adams said the collapse occurred as the miners were digging for platinum group metals at a disused dump on a private company’s site.

DMPR spokesperson Lerato Ntsoko confirmed the department had noted reports of the incident and said the site is a surface opencast mining operation and does not include an underground mine shaft.

“The loss of life is deeply regrettable, and the DMPR recognises the serious impact such events have on affected communities. The DMPR confirms that the incident occurred within the boundaries of an area where a valid mining permit has been issued.”

The department said it is reviewing all relevant information related to the incident and that, at an appropriate time, it will provide further details including matters related to compliance with laws governing licences and permits. The DMPR also said it is working with law enforcement, mining rights holders and affected communities to strengthen prevention and enforcement efforts against illegal mining.
