EFF Demands Arrests After KuGompo Violence Linked To ‘Nigerian King’ Claims
Tensions in the Eastern Cape have taken a dramatic turn after a protest in KuGompo spiralled into chaos, prompting the Economic Freedom Fighters to call for swift arrests and accountability.
What began as a community gathering outside City Hall quickly escalated into unrest, with scenes of burning vehicles and looted shops raising fresh concerns about how volatile the situation has become.
Protest Over Controversial Coronation
At the heart of the anger is the reported coronation of Igbo chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, who is said to have declared himself the “King of the Igbo Nation” in KuGompo, formerly known as East London.
Residents gathered in opposition to the move, questioning both its legitimacy and its place within South Africa’s traditional leadership structures.
But as the protest unfolded, a breakaway group turned to violence. At least ten vehicles were set alight, and several local businesses were looted, leaving parts of the city scarred and shaken.
EFF Calls For Accountability
The EFF has responded firmly, urging authorities to arrest those responsible for inciting violence and to hold them financially accountable for the damage caused.
Party spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said the unrest should never have reached this point, stressing that those who exploited the situation must face consequences.
He also criticised what he described as a failure by government to clearly communicate the legal framework around traditional leadership, suggesting that better guidance could have prevented confusion and conflict.
Understanding The Law Around Kingship
In South Africa, traditional leadership is not something that can be claimed informally. It is governed by the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act of 2019, which outlines a strict process for recognition.
This includes recommendations from the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, followed by formal approval from the President and publication in the Government Gazette.
According to the EFF, any self-declaration of kingship outside this process is not only offensive but unlawful.
The party went further, saying it is particularly problematic for a foreign national to claim such authority within South Africa, where traditional leadership is deeply tied to land, identity, and governance.
Political Tensions And Community Fallout
The incident has also exposed deeper tensions around identity, migration, and political opportunism. The EFF accused various political actors of fuelling unrest and using the situation to gain traction, rather than calming communities.
At the same time, the party has instructed its structures in Buffalo City to remain on the ground, monitoring developments and assisting residents whose property was damaged.
A City Searching For Stability
For many in KuGompo, the events have left more questions than answers. While the initial protest reflected genuine concerns about legitimacy and cultural boundaries, the violence has shifted the focus to law enforcement and accountability.
As authorities work to restore order, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly unresolved tensions can boil over, especially when legal clarity and leadership are lacking.
