There’s something about a long weekend in South Africa, the roads are packed, the braais are planned, and for many, there’s always that quiet little “what if?” moment.
This year, that moment feels a lot bigger.
The PowerBall and PowerBall Plus jackpots for Friday, 3 April 2026, have climbed to a combined R74 million, turning an already meaningful Good Friday into something that could, at least for one lucky player become unforgettable.
In a rare turn of events, it’s actually PowerBall Plus stealing the spotlight.
While the main PowerBall jackpot sits at R16 million, the PowerBall Plus prize has surged ahead to R58 million, making it the bigger draw this time around.
It’s not something regular players see often and it’s already sparked conversation among lottery fans who are used to the main jackpot being the headline act.
The current prize pool follows a string of payouts in March that temporarily brought jackpots down. But with no recent big wins to reset expectations, the numbers have climbed quickly again just in time for the Easter break.
And compared to the average PowerBall payout of around R22 million, this week’s jackpot is more than triple the norm.
As news of the R74 million spread, South Africans did what they do best took it straight to social media.
From jokes about quitting jobs on Tuesday, to dreams of paying off bond debt or finally booking that international holiday, timelines have been filled with hopeful speculation.
There’s also a familiar mix of realism and humour:
It’s that uniquely South African blend of optimism and self-awareness, dreaming big, but keeping it grounded.
Here’s the reality check: the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 42,310,200.
In other words, extremely slim.
Every draw is independent, meaning whether you’ve played for years or you’re buying your first ticket this Friday, your chances are exactly the same. The lottery doesn’t “remember” past numbers and statistically, the house wins almost every time.
But that tiny fraction of possibility? That’s what keeps people playing.
If you’re feeling lucky, here’s how it works:
Tickets are available until 20:30 on Friday, with the draw taking place at 21:00.
You can play online, via the app, or at participating retailers nationwide.
There’s also a bit of industry change on the horizon.
The National Lottery operator is set to switch in June 2026, which could bring shifts in how games are run, marketed, or even structured. For now, though, it’s business as usual and jackpots like this keep interest high.
Interestingly, another lottery draw this week is offering an even bigger combined prize pool of R89 million.
But there’s something about PowerBall, especially over a long weekend like Easter, that captures public imagination in a different way.
Maybe it’s the simplicity. Maybe it’s the timing. Or maybe it’s just tradition.
Six numbers. That’s all that stands between an ordinary long weekend and a completely different life.
For most, it will remain a hopeful “what if.” But for someone, somewhere in South Africa, this Good Friday could come with a story they’ll be telling for the rest of their life.
And for everyone else?
Well… there’s always the next draw.
