Gauteng traffic officer granted R3,000 bail after alleged April rape in Arcadia apartment block
Traffic officer released on bail after alleged sexual assault in Arcadia
A 36-year-old Gauteng traffic officer accused of raping a 26-year-old woman who lives in his apartment block was released on R3,000 bail after appearing in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.
Allegations and timeline
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng said the alleged incident took place on 13 April 2026. According to the NPA spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, the accused and the complainant met on the fourth-floor staircase of their apartment building in Arcadia and smoked together.
Mahanjana said the accused then allegedly persuaded the complainant to go to the building’s top floor to continue their conversation, where an altercation is said to have occurred. The NPA alleges the accused pinned the complainant against a wall and inserted his fingers underneath her skirt and into her vagina.
After the complainant reportedly pushed the accused away and he fell down several stairs, the NPA said the accused allegedly grabbed her again, pinned her to a wall, lifted her slightly and raped her. The complainant then ran back to her apartment and locked the door.
Police report, arrest and court outcome
The matter was reported to police on 23 April 2026, and the accused was arrested at his residence the following day. During bail proceedings, the State did not oppose bail as the accused was not considered a flight risk. The court granted bail of R3,000.
The case was postponed for further investigation to 15 July 2026. The accused cannot be named publicly until he has pleaded.
Official account
“Afterwards, the accused allegedly persuaded the complainant not to return to her apartment but instead to accompany him to the top floor of the building to continue their conversation,”
NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, outlining the alleged sequence of events.
What happens next
The matter will proceed while further investigations continue ahead of the next court appearance on 15 July 2026.
