Routine patrol on N4 leads to major dagga seizure near Kaapmuiden

Mpumalanga police arrested a 37-year-old man after officers found a large consignment of dagga in his vehicle on Wednesday, May 20.

How police discovered the consignment

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, officers stationed at Kaapmuiden were conducting routine patrols along the N4 when they noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on the roadside.

“The vehicle, a brown Toyota Hilux fitted with a canopy and bearing Mpumalanga registration plates, drew the attention of officers, who stopped to investigate,” said Nonyane-Mpe.

What was seized and the arrest

During an inspection, police found 41 bags of dagga loaded in the bakkie. The confiscated drugs weighed approximately 502.6kg and had an estimated street value of more than R3 million.

The driver was immediately arrested and charged with dealing in dagga. He is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, May 21.

Investigation and context

Police stopped the vehicle after it drew officers’ attention during a routine patrol and discovered the load during an on-site inspection. Further proceedings will follow through the criminal courts.
