Prince Harry’s UK family visit in doubt over security concerns

Prince Harry’s plans to return to the United Kingdom with his wife, Meghan, and their children next month are facing fresh uncertainty after concerns over security arrangements threatened to derail what would have been the family’s first visit together in four years.

The development comes just weeks before events linked to the countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, where the Duke of Sussex is expected to play a prominent role.

Reporting by The Guardian indicates that the family’s proposed visit has been thrown into doubt after a request for police protection outside royal residences was declined.

According to the BBC, Prince Harry’s team had sought publicly funded police protection while the family was in Britain but was informed that the request had not been approved. The broadcaster reported that the duke is exploring whether alternative security arrangements could still make the trip possible.

A source close to Prince Harry described him as “distraught”, saying his priority remains the safety of his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

“The hope is they can meet their grandfather, but there is no way that can happen if they are chased by paparazzi wherever they go from the moment they step off the plane.”

The visit had been expected to give the children an opportunity to spend time with King Charles III for the first time since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.

The latest setback follows Prince Harry’s long-running dispute over security arrangements in the UK. Last year, he lost a legal challenge relating to automatic police protection while visiting Britain, although security assessments continue to be considered on a case-by-case basis through the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec).

A UK government spokesperson reiterated its longstanding position on protective security.

“The UK’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate. It is our longstanding policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security.”

While police protection is available within royal estates under certain circumstances, any travel outside those locations would require separate arrangements, leaving uncertainty over whether the family can safely attend public engagements planned around the Invictus Games countdown.

The visit was also expected to include meetings with charities Prince Harry has continued to support since stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California.

No final decision has yet been announced, and Prince Harry’s team is understood to be considering alternative options before confirming whether Meghan and the children will travel to the UK.
