According to IOL, suspended Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence Maj-Gen. Feroz Khan was hospitalised after being shot in a suspected targeted attack in Houghton on Sunday night, days before he was due to appear at the Madlanga Commission.

What happened

According to IOL, two unidentified gunmen travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz opened fire on Khan before fleeing the scene. Investigators recovered at least two spent bullet casings, and reports indicate Khan suffered gunshot wounds to his lower body.

Medical condition and police response

According to IOL, Khan was rushed to Netcare Milpark Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Police have confirmed the incident and launched an investigation.

Investigation steps

According to IOL, the Acting National Commissioner has directed that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) be incorporated into the investigation. Authorities warned against public speculation about motive.

“It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the Commission,” said Brig. Athlenda Mathe, according to IOL.

Timing and context

According to IOL, the shooting occurred just days before Khan was expected to appear at the Madlanga Commission, which is investigating allegations of corruption, drug theft and the illicit precious metals trade.

The events are under active investigation.
