eThekwini Municipality says ongoing repatriation efforts have moved roughly 7,000 Malawian nationals from the Durban Drive-In site to a processing centre in Musina, Limpopo.

Coordinated transport and processing

The Municipality said the relocation operation is being carried out in coordination with the Department of Home Affairs and supporting non-profit organisations. It provided logistical and operational support to facilitate processing and movement of the people being transported.

Bus movements and remaining numbers

On the latest day of operations, 58 buses departed the Drive-In site, followed by a further 10 buses the next morning. Authorities said an additional 70 buses were expected to leave throughout the day as efforts continued.

The Municipality said about 300 people were still awaiting processing at the site and that authorities anticipated all remaining individuals would be transported by tomorrow.

Logistics challenges

The Municipality said it was engaging with the Department of Home Affairs to secure a dedicated truck to transport luggage, noting that baggage had contributed to space constraints on buses.

Municipal statement

The eThekwini Municipality said it remains committed to ensuring the repatriation process is conducted in a safe, dignified and orderly manner.
