Gauteng hosts special licence handovers as 14 August deadline looms

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport will host a series of special operating-licence handover ceremonies from 12 to 14 August 2026 to enable taxi and scholar transport operators to collect approved but uncollected licences before the collection deadline.

Final window to collect approved licences

MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela called on operators to use the final opportunity to collect their licences ahead of the 14 August 2026 deadline. She warned that licences not collected by that date risk being subjected to applicable administrative processes in line with relevant legislation.

Why collection matters

The MEC emphasised that an operating licence is a legal requirement for any public transport operator wishing to provide services in Gauteng. The special handover events are intended to assist compliant operators to receive their approved licences before the collection cut-off.

Programme and participation

Diale-Tlabela said the Department will host the final operating-licence handover ceremonies across the province between 12 and 14 August 2026. Operators whose licences are ready for collection were encouraged to attend the ceremony designated for their region and to bring the necessary identification and supporting documentation for collection.

Regulatory and service-delivery aims

The MEC described the special handover programme as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of public transport regulation, eliminate administrative backlogs and ensure operators continue to operate legally under the National Land Transport Act.

Engagement with the industry

The department has been engaging with the taxi industry and scholar transport operators through regional outreach, awareness campaigns and earlier handover ceremonies to encourage collection of approved operating licences.

“An operating licence is a legal requirement for any public transport operator wishing to provide services in Gauteng,” the MEC said.

Operators who have not yet collected approved licences are urged to use the remaining handover events this week to avoid administrative action.
