Spider-Man: Brand New Day crosses $1 billion at global box office

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has raced past $1 billion at the international box office, cementing its place among the biggest cinema hits of the year and putting the superhero blockbuster within striking distance of even bigger records.

While this new addition to the MCU was sure to be one of the biggest movies of the year, the latest numbers have turned what was already a huge theatrical run into something far more significant.

The Sony-Marvel film has now reportedly collected $1.67 billion (about R27 billion) worldwide, with more than $1 billion coming from international markets outside North America.

That makes Brand New Day only the 16th film ever to pass the $1 billion mark internationally. It reached the milestone in just 12 days overseas, making it the second-fastest movie to do so, behind Avengers: Endgame.

For a film that is still relatively early in its theatrical run, the numbers point to a blockbuster with plenty of fuel left in the tank.

The film’s second weekend was another indication of just how strong demand has been.

Reportedly, Brand New Day brought in around $144 million in the US and Canada during its second weekend, pushing its domestic total to roughly $654 million in just 10 days. Its worldwide second weekend added another $381 million, including approximately $237 million from international markets.

That performance has put the latest Spider-Man adventure firmly into blockbuster territory, with the film already ranking among the highest-grossing movies ever made. The pace has also seen it move beyond the lifetime earnings of Spider-Man: No Way Home in a number of international markets.

In Brazil, for example, the movie has become the highest-grossing film of all time in the territory after only two weekends. Its performance there is already ahead of both No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame. Spain, Peru and Italy have produced similar milestones, while Brand New Day has also overtaken No Way Home in several other markets.

The film’s run has been described as a ‘blistering pace’, and the figures certainly back that up.

Brand New Day has made history with its run in South African cinemas, with its opening weekend gross of R44 million making for the biggest opening in South African cinema history.

With the film already at $1.67 billion worldwide, the film has put a $2 billion finish within sight.

There is still a significant distance to cover, and box-office momentum inevitably changes as a film moves further into its theatrical run. But its performance across multiple international territories means the possibility is no longer far-fetched.

Other films to gross $2 billion at the Box office include:

  • Avatar (2009): $2.92 billion
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019): $2.79 billion
  • Avatar: The Way of Water (2022): $2.33 billion
  • Titanic (1997): $2.26 billion
  • Ne Zha 2 (2025): $2.26 billion
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015):  $2.07 billion
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018): $2.05 billion

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has moved beyond being merely another successful superhero sequel. It is now one of the defining theatrical blockbusters of the year. If its extraordinary pace continues, the final box-office figure could make an already record-setting Spider-Man outing an even bigger piece of cinema history.
