Snow and icy rain hit Johannesburg as rare cut‑off low chills Gauteng

Persistent rain, light snowfall, howling winds and biting cold swept parts of Gauteng this week after a rare weather system parked itself over the interior, bringing icy rain and flurries of snow to Johannesburg and other areas.

Rare cut‑off low behind the cold snap

The provincial weather bureau said a rare cut‑off low described as a section of cold, low‑pressure air that broke away from the main weather system became stationary and settled over the interior. Gauteng Weather warned that the cold snap is “intensifying.”

Temperatures across the region

Forecasters said Johannesburg’s mercury will remain in single digits at 1°C, before gradually warming to a maximum of 18°C on Friday. Pretoria was reported slightly warmer at 3°C, reaching a high of 20°C on Friday.

How the system formed

Climatologist Professor Jennifer Fitchett of Wits University’s School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies said the system developed from a cold front that moved across the Cape and South Coast. She noted that snow in Johannesburg is “uncommon but not unusual.”

“The city’s high altitude means temperatures can occasionally become cold enough for snow when the right weather system is present.”

Warnings for drivers and emergency response

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department warned road users that ongoing overcast weather and persistent showers have left road surfaces damp, slick and hazardous. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla highlighted the increased risks on wet roads and said officers were deployed along major arterial routes and freeways to manage traffic flow.

“We appeal to every motorist to take extra personal care, slow down, leave earlier for your destination, and stay safe on the roads today,”

The JMPD listed wet‑weather driving guidance including slowing down, increasing following distance, using dipped headlights, avoiding standing water and being alert for pedestrians.

The provincial weather bureau warned the adverse weather conditions are expected to continue for the rest of the week, with persistent rain and cold to remain a feature across parts of Gauteng.
