SANDF ends reservist call-up after video shows man appearing intoxicated in uniform
The SANDF has terminated the active reserve call-up of a reservist after a video showed him appearing intoxicated while in uniform at a Pretoria unit on 6 August.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has ended the active reserve call-up of a reservist after a video circulated showing him appearing intoxicated while wearing military uniform at one of its units in Pretoria.
What happened
The incident took place on Thursday, 6 August 2026, when a video circulated on social media showing a man in SANDF uniform who appeared to be intoxicated in what seems to be a restroom. In the footage the reservist can be seen struggling to walk and using his left hand against a wall to steady himself. A man off-camera asks, “Why are you drinking alcohol in uniform?” The reservist appears to try to prevent the recording before walking away.
SANDF response and action
Following the video’s circulation, the SANDF confirmed the individual was a member of the force. SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said the military was concerned about the soldier’s conduct and described the behaviour as unacceptable.
“The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) notes with concern and condemns inappropriate conduct involving one of its members who was recorded under the influence of alcohol while wearing military uniform in a public space on Thursday, 6 August 2026,” Dlamini said.
Dlamini said an investigation established that the individual was a SANDF reservist on active Reserve Call-Up at one of the force’s units in Pretoria. “Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against the member, and the call-up has since been terminated,” he said.
Institutional stance
The SANDF emphasised that such behaviour is inconsistent with the values and discipline expected of its members. Dlamini said the force and its leadership would continue to act against conduct that damages the institution’s reputation.
“The SANDF and its entire leadership reiterate that any conduct that brings the institution and military profession into disrepute cannot be tolerated and will continue to act decisively against any behaviour that undermines the integrity of the Defence Force,”
