Emergency teams deployed after fire breaks out in Pomeroy CBD
Emergency response teams, including municipal fire services and the uMzinyathi District Disaster and Rescue team, have been deployed to tackle a fire in Pomeroy CBD, KwaZulu-Natal.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to the Pomeroy central business district (CBD) in KwaZulu-Natal after a fire was reported in the area, according to local government officials.
What happened
Video and eyewitness reports showed plumes of smoke rising from several buildings in the Pomeroy CBD while fire and emergency services moved to contain the blaze.
Official response
Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi directed the immediate deployment of emergency response teams following reports of the fire. Municipal fire and rescue services were dispatched to the scene to respond to and contain the fire.
The uMzinyathi District Disaster and Rescue team has been fully activated to support the emergency response and to conduct an assessment of the situation. Additional support units from uMvoti and eNdumeni Local Municipalities are also being deployed to reinforce the response.
