Sandton restaurant confrontation leads to intimidation charge after viral video
A confrontation at a Sandton restaurant has escalated into a police case after footage showing a Zimbabwean businessman allegedly threatening women went viral on social media.
Lawrence Chamurwa Mudzinganyama has been charged with intimidation and is expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 1 October.
The incident happened on 18 September at Vlamo Restaurant in Sandton Gate, Glenadrienne, where a private birthday dinner reportedly took an alarming turn.

What happened at the restaurant?
According to the complaint, Mudzinganyama approached a group of women during the dinner and offered to take photographs with them.
They declined.
He later allegedly asked one of the women for her phone number. When the group asked him to leave them alone, the interaction reportedly became heated.
The confrontation was recorded on a cellphone, with the footage capturing him allegedly making threats against the women while also referring to his wealth.
The video subsequently spread widely online, bringing the incident to the attention of police and senior government officials.
Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said the matter was being prioritised, adding that Mudzinganyama’s immigration status should also be examined by the Department of Home Affairs.
Vlamo Restaurant at Sandton Gate, owned by Mun Manal, who also owns Ukko Restaurant in Bryanston, has distanced itself from a circulating video showing a man threatening a woman after claiming she had rudely denied him.

Restaurant distances itself from businessman
As the footage gained traction, Vlamo Restaurant moved to clarify its relationship with Mudzinganyama.
The restaurant said he is not employed by or affiliated with the establishment, despite claims he allegedly made during the confrontation.
Management said he was removed from the premises after they became aware of what had happened.
Vlamo also said the safety and dignity of women, guests and staff remained a priority, adding that it had zero tolerance for conduct that could compromise their wellbeing.
The restaurant said it was supporting the women involved and remained in contact with them.

Mudzinganyama apologises
Mudzinganyama issued an apology on Sunday, saying he took responsibility for his conduct during the incident.
He said he should have walked away and approached restaurant management instead of allowing the confrontation to continue.
He also expressed regret for the fear and distress caused to the women and acknowledged the wider reaction after the video circulated online.
The criminal case will now move into the court process, with Mudzinganyama expected to appear in Randburg on 1 October.
The incident has also reignited a familiar Johannesburg conversation around personal boundaries, women’s safety and what can happen when an uncomfortable interaction escalates in a public space.
