OR Tambo drug bust: suspected heroin worth over R2 million seized

A 52-year-old South African man is facing drug trafficking-related charges after police allegedly found substances suspected to be heroin worth more than R2 million in his luggage at OR Tambo International Airport.

The arrest happened on Sunday, 20 September, after the man arrived in Gauteng on a flight from Accra, Ghana. The operation was conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from the Border Management Authority (BMA).

The latest interception is also the third suspected drug mule arrest at OR Tambo in three weeks, according to police.

Suspected heroin found in luggage

Police intercepted the passenger after he arrived at the airport and conducted a search of his luggage.

During the search, officers allegedly discovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.

The seized substances have an estimated street value of more than R2 million, although the investigation and legal process will determine the precise nature of the material and the circumstances surrounding the alleged trafficking.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week on drug trafficking-related charges.

His arrest comes as authorities continue targeting suspected narcotics networks operating through major points of entry.

Third suspected drug mule in three weeks

For OR Tambo, the latest case highlights the continued focus on the airport as police and border authorities work to intercept suspected drug trafficking operations.

SAPS said the latest arrest brings the number of suspected drug mules arrested at the airport to three within three weeks.

The airport, located in the Kempton Park area, is South Africa’s major international aviation gateway, making intelligence-led policing and cooperation between agencies an important part of efforts to identify suspected trafficking activity.

In this case, the operation involved SAPS and the BMA working together before the suspect could leave the airport.

Investigation into trafficking network continues

While the arrest represents a significant seizure, investigators are still working to establish the wider circumstances surrounding the case.

Police have not indicated whether the suspect was allegedly acting alone or as part of a larger trafficking network.

SAPS said it would continue with intelligence-led and targeted operations aimed at disrupting drug trafficking syndicates.
