‘Topic of the day in Europe’: Sibanyoni tells Madlanga Commission it has global attention

Mpumalanga taxi boss and businessman Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni told the Madlanga Commission on Monday that the inquiry into alleged corruption and state capture had attracted attention beyond South Africa.

Witness says inquiry drew international notice

Sibanyoni returned to the commission’s witness stand and told proceedings that people abroad were following the inquiry closely.

“I was in Europe, when I was there in that hotel, you were the topic of the day,”

He said the international scrutiny showed the significance of the proceedings and described it as being watched with “Belgian eyes”.

Allegations and past testimony

Sibanyoni faces allegations of extortion and corruption in Mpumalanga. He previously gave evidence about a troubled business relationship with the late taxi boss Jothan Msibi, whom he accused of orchestrating two attempts on his life.

Sibanyoni told the commission the second alleged assassination attempt followed his decision to leave their taxi partnership in 2019.
