Man in his 20s killed after hatchback collides with truck and rolls on N17

A man believed to be in his 20s died after the hatchback he was in collided with a truck-trailer and rolled several times on the N17 near the Rondebult Road on‑ramp in Ekurhuleni. The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said the vehicle came to rest in the middle of the eastbound carriageway.

Crash and emergency response

DEMS received the emergency call at 3:30 a.m. and dispatched firefighting and rescue teams, spokesperson William Ntladi said. On arrival responders found a hatchback with five occupants that had struck the rear of a truck‑trailer, commonly referred to as a superlink, and had rolled several times before stopping just after the Rondebult Road on‑ramp.

Casualties and injuries

One male passenger, believed to have been the driver, was trapped in the wreckage with severe injuries and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The four other occupants, all men, sustained serious but stable injuries and were taken by ambulance to nearby medical facilities. DEMS said the truck driver was unharmed.

Rescue operations and investigation

Rescue crews used specialised hydraulic equipment, commonly known as the Jaws of Life, to access the vehicle and recover the deceased. Two lanes of the freeway were temporarily closed while rescue operations were under way.

“On arrival, a hatchback light motor vehicle with five occupants was found to have rolled several times before landing in the middle of the N17 freeway just after the Rondebult Road on‑ramp after crashing into the rear of a truck‑trailer,”

Ntladi said.

The scene was handed over to law enforcement agencies for further investigation and scene rehabilitation, authorities said. The City of Ekurhuleni is investigating the cause of the crash.
