Security Forces Prepared for Election Duties in KwaZulu-Natal

With the 2026 Local Government Elections imminent, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi addressed thousands of members from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) at Hoy Park in Durban. His message was clear: while providing security for the elections, officers must not lose sight of their fundamental role in law enforcement.

No Tolerance for Crime During Elections

General Mkhwanazi emphasized that criminal activity does not pause for elections. He warned officers not to be complacent, stating, “Criminals will not be on holiday tomorrow. Some of them will not even vote.”

He urged security personnel to intervene immediately if they witness any criminal acts at or near voting locations, and to assist any member of the public who approaches them with a concern. He made it clear that officers should not neglect their crime-fighting responsibilities while deployed for election duty.

Clear Directives for Election Security

  • If a crime is witnessed, officers must act immediately, regardless of their election deployment.
  • Officers were told not to accept compromise or be lenient due to their election-related assignments.
  • Zero tolerance will be maintained for any form of lawlessness or violation of regulations near voting stations.

Concrete Security Measures in Place

The province’s election security plan, as outlined by Mkhwanazi, includes a large-scale deployment across KwaZulu-Natal. Officers will be stationed at more than 4,300 voting stations, operate mobile teams to search suspicious vehicles, and escort Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) materials between secure warehouses and polling stations.

These measures are designed to ensure that both voters and electoral staff are safe and that the democratic process runs smoothly.

Firm Approach to Electoral Offences

Mkhwanazi highlighted that police would take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt the voting process. In particular, illegal possession of dangerous weapons or attempts to intimidate voters will not be tolerated, and any breach of the Electoral Act will be met with strict enforcement.

“We are not sending you out there to negotiate with the law breakers,” Mkhwanazi told the assembled officers.

Expectations for Officer Conduct

Discipline and professionalism were central to Mkhwanazi’s message. Officers were reminded to remain calm, even if provoked, to be prompt in reporting for duty, and to avoid any illegal substances while on assignment. Maintaining public trust is essential, especially during the critical period of elections.

A Massive Logistical Undertaking

KwaZulu-Natal is bracing for a large voter turnout, with over 5.8 million people expected to vote. The security deployment is a vital component in ensuring that the elections are conducted peacefully and transparently, reflecting the will of the people.

Election periods typically present challenges for law enforcement, ranging from heightened tensions to opportunistic crimes. By reinforcing a strong presence and clear directives, authorities aim to balance the twin goals of safe voting and ongoing crime prevention.

Community Role in Election Safety

While security agencies are prepared for a range of potential incidents, the public also plays a role by staying alert and reporting any suspicious activities to authorities. When communities and law enforcement work together, the risk of crime disrupting the electoral process is reduced.

The send-off in Durban underscores the significant planning and commitment required to secure one of the country’s most important democratic events. Law enforcement will remain vigilant, ensuring that criminal activity does not overshadow the election process.
