Ramaphosa Highlights Government of National Unity’s Role Ahead of G20 Summit in 2025

During his address at the World Economic Forum (WEF), President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored the vital role that South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) plays in improving the country’s global standing. He focused particularly on South Africa’s preparation for hosting the 2025 G20 Summit in Johannesburg, the first time an African nation will host this prestigious event.
Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of the GNU in fostering stability and inclusivity in South Africa. The GNU, formed after the May 2024 elections, is made up of 10 political parties and was established in just four weeks—remarkably faster than in many other countries. This swift formation demonstrates the government’s commitment to collaborative governance and the pursuit of shared economic and social goals.

He explained that South Africa’s cooperative culture, built on years of dialogue and partnerships with labor, civil society, and social partners, has positioned the country to take a leadership role on the global stage. “This cooperative culture and the approach that we have developed over many years has taken us to a higher level,” said Ramaphosa.
Looking ahead to the G20 Summit, which will be hosted in Johannesburg in November 2025, Ramaphosa called for enhanced global cooperation to tackle key challenges. He also emphasized that the GNU’s achievements have helped build investor confidence, drawing significant interest in South Africa’s economic potential. The government’s stability and inclusivity have played an essential role in positioning the country as a critical player in global economic discussions.

“As the leaders of the G20 return to Africa, we make a call that we all harness these essential capabilities that will make us take action to build a better and fairer world,” Ramaphosa concluded. The upcoming G20 Summit in Johannesburg, he said, will be an opportunity to elevate cooperation among the world’s leading economies, promoting collaboration to address pressing global issues.
The successful hosting of the G20 Summit will undoubtedly mark a significant moment in South Africa’s diplomatic history, and Ramaphosa’s address reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and contributing to global growth and development.
