Tyla’s Sold-Out Concert Sets Streaming Milestone for African Entertainment

Tyla’s sold-out concert at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, now available on Showmax, marks a groundbreaking achievement for African entertainment. The live stream reached 44 countries, setting a new standard for local streaming services and demonstrating the potential for African platforms to compete on a global scale, especially in delivering live entertainment content.
To extend the concert’s reach, Showmax will offer the concert on-demand starting Thursday, January 30. Additionally, the concert will air on DStv’s Mzansi Wethu (channel 163) on Saturday, February 1, at 8:30 PM, with a repeat on Tuesday, February 4, at 4 PM. Mzansi Wethu is included in all DStv packages from Access and up, further expanding accessibility.

This accomplishment stands in stark contrast to Netflix’s recent failed attempt to live-stream the “Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson” fight, which faced significant technical issues. Approximately 90,000 viewers experienced outages during the event, highlighting the challenges of live streaming at scale.
Despite some viewers expressing concerns about audio quality during Tyla’s concert, Showmax maintains that technical issues were minimal, with less than 1% of social media comments mentioning sound problems. The platform emphasizes that live concerts often come with variable sound experiences, with 99.99% of the feedback being positive.

Yatish Narsi, Chief Marketing Officer for MultiChoice and Showmax South Africa, called the live stream a “game-changer” for African artists. The success of Tyla’s concert demonstrates what’s possible when local platforms push the boundaries of technology to support viewers across multiple countries.
Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, praised the achievement, stating, “Tyla is leading the way, and if Showmax continues to spotlight our talent, more African artists will gain the visibility they deserve.”
