Brixton Magistrate's Court

A City of Joburg official has recently been sentenced for corruption by the Brixton Magistrate’s Court.

Hlengani Voster Maluleke, a 41-year-old environmental inspector for the City, was apprehended by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Team in Johannesburg, as confirmed by Hawks spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase. The incident occurred in July 2022 as reported by IOL.

Colonel Nkwalase explained, “During his environmental inspections at the Brixton Shoprite Checkers, the accused identified inconsistencies within the store. Subsequently, on July 13, 2022, he imposed a fine of R5,000 on the establishment.”

However, on July 15, 2022, Maluleke revisited the store and allegedly demanded a bribe of R1,000 to waive the fine.

“The matter was promptly reported to the Hawks for further investigation, leading to the subsequent arrest of Maluleke,” added Nkwalase.

The arrest unfolded during an operation conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team at the Brixton Shoprite Checkers on July 18, 2022, where Maluleke had come to collect the purported gratification of R1,000. He was released on bail for R1,000 the following day, July 19, 2022.

However, Maluleke’s legal troubles continued when he absconded from the court earlier this month, resulting in the forfeiture of his bail to the State.

Ultimately, the Brixton Magistrate’s Court handed down a sentence of four years imprisonment to Maluleke, with the option of an R20,000 fine, half of which was suspended for a period of five years.
