Who led the investigations

According to IOL, the investigations were conducted by the Council for the Built Environment (CBE). Macpherson was joined at the briefing by CBE chairperson Amelia Mtshali and chief executive officer Dr Msizi Myeza, who outlined the findings and recommendations arising from the probes.

Where the collapses occurred

According to IOL, the CBE examined incidents at four sites:

  • Redcliffe in Verulam, Durban
  • Doornkop in Soweto
  • Ormonde in Johannesburg
  • Magnolia Development in Sea Point, Cape Town

What the briefing aims to answer

According to IOL, the briefing is expected to provide answers on the causes of the collapses, whether building regulations and professional standards were breached, and what action may be taken against those found responsible.

Broader concerns

According to IOL, the four incidents sparked widespread concern over construction safety and regulatory oversight. The investigations were tasked with determining accountability and identifying measures needed to prevent similar tragedies in future.

Next steps

According to IOL, Macpherson, Mtshali and Dr Myeza outlined findings and recommendations at the briefing; further decisions or actions arising from those recommendations were not detailed in the IOL report.
