Interpol still seeks two Gupta brothers, Acting Police Minister confirms

Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia has confirmed that two Gupta brothers, Rajesh and Atul Gupta, remain the subject of Interpol red notices issued in 2022, according to a written parliamentary reply published on 29 September 2026.

Where the case stands

Cachalia said the Interpol National Central Bureau in South Africa is awaiting the finalisation of a provisional request for arrest and a formal extradition request as part of international legal cooperation concerning the two men.

Previous arrests and extradition attempts

The brothers were previously arrested in the United Arab Emirates in June 2022 after Interpol red notices were circulated. South Africa pursued their extradition and, the National Prosecuting Authority confirmed in July 2022, a formal extradition application for Atul and Rajesh Gupta was submitted to the UAE. The brothers were not ultimately returned to South Africa.

Criminal proceedings and allegations

The Guptas are wanted in connection with criminal proceedings linked to alleged fraud and money laundering, including the Nulane Investment case. The National Prosecuting Authority previously said the Nulane matter involved approximately R24.9 million allegedly diverted from a Free State agriculture department project.

The Gupta family became central figures in South Africa’s State Capture era, with allegations concerning their relationship with former president Jacob Zuma and their alleged influence over government and state-owned enterprises.
