Joburg largely calm as city prepares for nationwide anti-illegal immigration protests
Johannesburg remained largely calm on Tuesday morning as commuters travelled to work and taxis ran their usual routes, even as authorities and residents prepared for nationwide demonstrations against illegal immigration scheduled for 30 June.
Normal activity with pockets of disruption
Across suburbs from Johannesburg North, including Cosmo City, Randburg and Rosebank, into the central business district, day-to-day activity continued, with major shopping centres and petrol stations open and public transport operating.
At the same time, some shops near Bree Taxi Rank, FNB Bank City and surrounding areas remained closed, traffic volumes in parts of the CBD were lighter than usual, and pedestrian movement was slower than a typical weekday morning. In several neighbourhoods, notably Cosmo City and Braamfontein, street vendors who normally sell food, clothing and other goods were absent.
Workers from Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, were observed carrying out their duties near Nelson Mandela Bridge.
Security preparations and traffic warnings
A heavy police presence was visible across the city as authorities prepared to maintain law and order before and during the demonstrations. The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) warned motorists to expect significant traffic disruptions.
