Access to Joburg CBD restricted as city prepares for Springbok v England at Ellis Park

Motorists should expect heavy restrictions around Johannesburg’s CBD as the city secures the precinct for the Springboks’ match against England at Ellis Park. Road closures begin at 10pm on Friday, 3 July and the area is planned to return to normal at 10pm on Saturday, 4 July, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed.

What’s happening and when

The rugby kick-off is scheduled for 5.40pm on Saturday. The JMPD said it will deploy a substantial number of officers to the New Doornfontein area from 6am to 11pm on match day. OUTsurance and Traffic Free Flow personnel will assist JMPD officers throughout Saturday.

“To ensure the safety and security of all attendees and to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic, the JMPD will deploy a substantial number of officers to the New Doornfontein area from 6am to 11pm on match day.”

Roads and intersections affected

The JMPD listed streets that will be closed from 10pm on Friday until 10pm on Saturday. The roads named in the notice are:

  • Joe Solvo Drove
  • Sivewright Avenue
  • Currey Street
  • Beit Street
  • Siemert Street
  • Charlton Terrace
  • Van Beek Street
  • Susie Street
  • Bertrams Road
  • Albertina Sisulu Road
  • Saratoga Avenue
  • Erin Street
  • Miller Street
  • Voorhout Street
  • 4th Street

The stadium precinct will be closed to general traffic at several intersections, also listed by the JMPD:

  • Albertina Sisulu Street at Gous, Dawe and Princess Streets
  • Betrams Street at Voorhout, Betrams, Fitzroy and Erin Streets
  • Charlton Terrace and Van Beek Street
  • Sivewright Street at Suzie, Curry and Beit Streets
  • Miller Street at Upper Rail, 9th, 4th and Park Streets, and at South Park Lane
  • Beit Street at Part, Erin and Dora Streets
  • South Park parkade and South Park Lane at 5th Street
  • Siemert Street and Curry Street

Travel options for fans

The JMPD encouraged fans to use alternatives to driving into the precinct. Park-and-ride buses will operate, with departures from the listed malls between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday, and the last bus leaving the stadium at 9pm.

Park-and-ride locations named by the JMPD include:

  • Centurion Mall
  • Clearwater Mall
  • Cresta Shopping Centre
  • East Rand Mall
  • Gold Reef City
  • Greenstone Shopping Centre
  • The Glen Shopping Centre
  • The Grove Mall
  • Montecasino
  • Melrose Arch
  • Mall of Africa
  • Menlyn Park
  • Sandton City

Rail options will also be available: Gautrain and Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) trains will run into Park Station, and a dedicated service to Ellis Park station will operate from there.

A dedicated e-hailing drop-off and pick-up zone will be sectioned off at Umjantshi House in Wolmarans Street, about 3km from the stadium. Taxi shuttle services will operate from collection and drop-off points at Eastgate Mall and St John’s College.

JMPD’s appeal to road users

“The JMPD appeals to all road users to cooperate with traffic authorities, adhere to traffic regulations, and exercise patience during this period.

“We urge motorists to familiarise themselves with the traffic management plan and allow extra travel time,” JMPD concluded.
