Kabelo Gwamanda accused of being a scammer

The newly elected mayor of Johannesburg, Kabelo Kwamanda, faces accusations of being part of a Ponzi scheme through his iThemba Lama Africa funeral scheme entity. Mpho Phalatse, the former City of Johannesburg mayor, has alleged that the project has ripped off many people. However, Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks has defended Kwamanda and accused Phalatse of being a sore loser after losing the mayoral election to Kwamanda.

According to The South African, Hendricks stated that Kwamanda passed the vetting process before being chosen as the mayoral candidate for the ANC-EFF-led coalition. He also mentioned that Al Jama-ah’s internal vetting processes did not find any adverse findings on the new mayor.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) promises to make the South African Police Service aware of the allegations. Kwamanda was elected during a council meeting on Friday, beating Phalatse and ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni. However, Mpho Phalatse is unconvinced that Kwamanda is the best candidate to lead the country’s economic hub.
