High-speed smuggling bid foiled on N1 as stolen Hilux seized near Polokwane
Police and private security partners intercepted a stolen Toyota Hilux Legend Edition double-cab bakkie on the N1 South outside Polokwane after spotting it travelling at high speed, leading to the arrest of a 45-year-old suspect and the recovery of the vehicle.
What happened
Acting on intelligence, officers maintained observation on the N1 South and positively spotted the bakkie as it sped past the Shell Ultra City filling station, where it was stopped. The vehicle was identified as a Toyota Hilux Legend Edition double-cab with a reported value of R700,000.
Arrest and charges
Preliminary investigations showed the double cab had been reported stolen at Loate police station in the Tshwane area. A 45-year-old driver was arrested at the scene and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. The suspect is expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June 2026.
Police response and intent
The interception prevented an alleged attempt to move the vehicle through Beitbridge Port of Entry. The operation involved police working in partnership with private security role players and was led by intelligence inputs.
Police statement
“This recovery demonstrates what we can achieve through intelligence-driven operations and strong partnerships between police and private security role players. We will continue to target cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates and ensure stolen vehicles are recovered, and criminals are apprehended to face the full might of the law,”
The quote was attributed to Provincial Police Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, who commended the operational teams for the arrest and recovery.
Ongoing investigations and recent activity
Police said investigations are continuing. The report notes that in April an intelligence-driven operation dismantled a vehicle theft syndicate operating across Limpopo, Gauteng, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, which resulted in arrests and the recovery of multiple stolen high-value vehicles.
