Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala called professionals to help with the Joburg explosion probe following the explosion at Bree Street in Johannesburg on Wednesday. In response to the incident, Minister Zikalala has requested teams of professionals in the built sector, including engineers, geologists, and other specialists from the Council for the Built Environment (a DPWI entity), to support initiatives led by the Gauteng Premier and City of Johannesburg leadership.
According to SANews, these professionals’ mobilisation aims to restore normalcy, protect the public, and rebuild the infrastructure affected by the blast. Residents living near the explosion site reported a strong smell of gas lingering after the explosion.
The blast occurred during rush hour. It resulted in the death of one person and 41 others injured, causing significant damage to sections of Bree Street and Rissik Street. As a precautionary measure, authorities have cordoned off most streets in the area due to the effects of the blast.
