An issue of racism at Curro Academy has led to the suspension of a teacher. According to IOL, the teacher allegedly called three learners monkeys after they were disruptive in class. Curro Holdings has confirmed the suspension at its Curro Academy Protea Glen in Soweto. The incident, believed to have occurred in the first term of last year, was brought to light last Friday.

Curro stated that it had made no formal complaint at the time through any channels at the school or within the organisation. The school’s executive head became aware of the allegations on Friday and immediately informed the Curro head office. Curro immediately suspended the teacher following the revelation and initiated a disciplinary enquiry. Last year, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemned racism allegations at the institution involving the executive head allegedly calling a fellow black woman teacher a monkey.
