SA-Made AI Platform Leova Earns Global Recognition for Transforming Clinical Trial Preparation
Johannesburg-based Leova, by BioInformatiCo, wins global acclaim for its AI-driven approach to streamlining clinical trial database preparation.
South African Innovation Gains International Acclaim
A Johannesburg-developed artificial intelligence (AI) platform is making waves in global clinical research, as BioInformatiCo’s Leova clinched second place at the 2026 CDISC AI Innovation Challenge. This achievement spotlights not only the ingenuity of African technology, but also its potential to address persistent bottlenecks in a field critical to global health advancements.
Streamlining Complex Clinical Trial Preparation
Clinical trials are foundational to developing new medicines and vaccines, yet preparing the digital infrastructure for these studies is often time-consuming and labour-intensive. Leova, developed by BioInformatiCo, automates the building and testing of clinical trial databases, which are essential for collecting and managing research data accurately.
By focusing on database preparationa process that can take ten to twenty weeks of specialist effortLeova enables research teams to identify errors and inconsistencies earlier. This efficiency reduces costly rework, shortens timelines, and directs limited resources towards scientific discovery.
African Technology Meets Global Challenges
BioInformatiCo’s approach reflects deep familiarity with the challenges faced by African and global research teams, including funding shortfalls and uncertainties that threaten research continuity. As health programmes across South Africa face disruptions due to international funding cuts, tools that cut down manual workloads are increasingly important. Shirley Collie, Founder and CEO of BioInformatiCo, highlighted this significance, noting that Leova’s recognition demonstrates Africa’s ability to generate evidence reflecting its own health needs while contributing globally.
“Placing second in the CDISC AI Innovation Challenge is an important endorsement of what we have built. It shows that technology developed in Africa can help tackle challenges in clinical research worldwide,”
How Leova Transforms the Clinical Data Process
Leova is integrated directly within BioInformatiCo’s clinical data management operations. Drawing on protocols from studies on infectious diseases like HIV, TB, Ebola, and COVID-19, the platform is tailor-made for the pressures of real-world research in Africa. Its core functions include:
- Drafting data collection forms and validation rules based on study protocols
- Building the required digital database
- Testing the system rigorously with simulated participant data designed to expose potential errors
This workflow centralises and accelerates critical preparations before participant enrolment. By surfacing design weaknesses before going live, Leova supports higher data quality and protocol adherence from the outset.
Combining AI Automation with Specialist Expertise
Unlike generic software licensing models, BioInformatiCo combines Leova’s technology with specialist human oversight. In practice, this synergy has reduced the testing and validation of databases from five days of expert work to just one, without compromising reliability or traceability. The company emphasises that while automation cannot replace sustainable funding or expert knowledge, it allows teams to operate more efficiently and maintain the rigour demanded by clinical research.
Scaling African Tech Innovation Internationally
BioInformatiCo currently supports clinical trials across sub-Saharan Africa and has plans for broader international expansion, including a US site and active discussions with sponsors in Europe and Australia. The company also aims to secure seed funding to drive Leova’s next phase of development.
The 2026 CDISC AI Innovation Challenge, organised by the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium, underscores the global importance of interoperable and standardised clinical research data. Leova distinguished itself among 50 submissions from 30 organisations, placing second out of 19 entries in a use-case focused on automating software testing with AI-driven synthetic data.
The Road Ahead for South African MedTech
Leova’s international recognition signals a new chapter for African-born health technology on the world stage. With persistent challenges in funding and infrastructure, solutions like Leovarooted in hands-on experience and innovative thinkinghelp ensure that research teams can work fast, efficiently, and with confidence in their data.
“This is an exciting time for South African innovation. We’ve built Leova to solve a real challenge in clinical research, drawing on our experience on the ground in Africa. Now, we have an opportunity to take that expertise and technology to the world,”
As clinical trials remain essential for bringing new medicines and vaccines to those who need them, platforms that deliver efficiency and quality are poised to play a pivotal rolenot just for Africa, but for global health research as a whole.
