Rescue operation in Humansdorp ends in tragedy

Emergency teams recovered the bodies of two dairy farm workers from a milk cooling tank in Humansdorp, the Citizen reports. The incident unfolded on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

What happened

According to the Citizen, the South African Police Service (Saps) Search and Rescue Unit jointly launched the rescue operation on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at approximately 4:29pm. The unit entered the confined space of a spiral-cooled milk tank to attempt a recovery.

Rescue details and victims

The Citizen reports that rescue personnel implemented a 3:1 rope system for the confined-space entry. The outlet also reports that Constable Emilio George, who was selected for his build, was equipped with a long-line, full-face breathing apparatus and lowered into the confined tank beside the spiral cooling rod.

Tragically, both bodies were found face-down in the water and were recovered through a narrow gap, then transferred to emergency medical services. The Citizen states that EMS declared the two men, aged 27 and 54, dead on the scene.

Investigation

The Citizen reports that an inquest docket was opened for further investigation.

The recovery came after a joint rescue attempt by specialised police search-and-rescue teams. Authorities have opened an inquest to establish the circumstances surrounding the confined-space deaths, the Citizen says.
