The Bokamoso arts institute choir from Mabopane, Pretoria, has achieved remarkable success in an international competition. At the 12th World Choir Games in South Korea, they secured three gold medals, an outstanding achievement for a choir participating in a global competition for the first time.

Despite having over 110 members, only 89 were available for the competition due to personal commitments. Nevertheless, they competed in three categories – mixed choir, musica sacra with accompaniment, and sinic for law – and took home gold in all of them, earning 90.38 points for mixed choir, 86.25 for musica sacra, and 90 points for sinic for law.

The level of competition was intense, with 46 countries and over 324 choirs vying for victory. Yet, the Bokamoso choir performed admirably, surpassing champions from renowned countries like the United States, Germany, Italy, and Indonesia to secure their well-deserved gold medals.

While there was no monetary prize, the status of world champion has brought immense pride and recognition back in South Africa. The choir received extensive media coverage, gaining exposure like never before. This newfound fame also opened doors for them, leading to their participation in the Gauteng choral music association, where they won the overall best performance title. Additionally, one of their choirs, Soshanguve, was honoured to perform for President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings.
