DJ Sumbody Murder Case: Nota Baloyi Slams Celebrity Silence

It has been nearly three years since amapiano DJ Sumbody was brutally gunned down in Johannesburg. Now, in a major development, four suspects have been arrested for his murder. But it isn’t just the arrests making headlines; it’s the eerie silence from those closest to him.
Music executive Nota Baloyi is not holding back.
‘I cut off all their tongues’
The suspects appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court this week, charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police believe three were hitmen and the fourth the mastermind behind the attack that killed DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards in November 2022.
While many expected tributes or reactions from his famous friends, Nota was the only one to speak up, and his words were explosive.
“The silence of DJ Sumbody’s celebrity friends is telling… I cut off all their tongues!” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), accusing the late DJ’s peers of turning their backs on him now that the case is back in the spotlight.
The internet responds: divided and emotional
Social media users flooded his comment section with reactions ranging from support to criticism. Some echoed Nota’s frustration.
“They’ve been quiet. It’s sad. These people can pretend, as long as it benefits them.”
“There are no friends in the industry.”
“Talking will get you killed, let law enforcement do their job.”
Others pointed out that fear may be keeping people quiet. In a city like Joburg, where crime doesn’t always come with closure, many say silence might be self-preservation.
Inside the courtroom: What’s next?
The four suspects made a brief appearance in court on Tuesday, 23 July 2025. The State requested a postponement to allow more time for investigation before a formal bail application. The case has been rescheduled to 29 July 2025.
The arrests have breathed new life into a case many feared would remain unsolved. Police say their investigation points to a planned and deliberate execution, with one of the accused allegedly ordering the hit.
Remembering DJ Sumbody: more than just a name
Born Oupa John Sefoka, DJ Sumbody was one of amapiano’s early pioneers, a connector in the scene, known for hits like Monate Mpolaye. His death shook the industry, yet few artists have spoken publicly about the case since.
Whether from fear, grief, or indifference, the silence has been louder than any tribute. And for many, that silence speaks volumes, especially now that arrests have been made.
