Law Society Condemns Assassination of Gauteng Attorney Bouwer van Niekerk

Brutal Attack Shakes Saxonwold Law Firm
The Gauteng legal community was left reeling after the targeted killing of insolvency attorney Bouwer van Niekerk, who was shot dead at his Saxonwold office last Friday. Police reports confirm that four suspects stormed the firm and shot van Niekerk in the boardroom before fleeing the scene.
Authorities are appealing to the public for information, urging anyone with leads to contact the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tips via the MySAPS app.
Law Society of South Africa Speaks Out
The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “brutal and targeted assault”. In a statement released on Monday, the organisation stressed that violence against lawyers undermines the rule of law and public confidence in the justice system.
“An attack like this strikes at the very heart of our democracy,” said LSSA President Nkosana Mvundlela. “When legal professionals can be lured to a meeting and killed in their own workplace, it sends a chilling message to everyone in the professionand to all South Africans who rely on the justice system.”
Van Niekerk’s Work in the Spotlight
Van Niekerk, a respected figure in insolvency and commercial law, was actively handling contentious business rescue and litigation matters at the time of his death. The LSSA highlighted a worrying trend of attacks against lawyers involved in complex commercial disputes and high-profile cases, noting that such incidents threaten not only the individuals targeted but also the legal system as a whole.
“Mr van Niekerk’s murder is not only a tragedy for his loved ones,” Mvundlela said. “It is a direct attack on the legal system. The profession must be able to operate without fear or intimidation.”
Public Reaction and Wider Concerns
Social media reactions have been immediate, with many South Africans expressing shock and concern. One Twitter user remarked, “This is terrifying. If lawyers can’t be safe in their offices, what hope do ordinary citizens have for justice?” Others called for swift police action and a thorough investigation into possible criminal networks behind the assassination.
A Call to Action
The LSSA has urged law enforcement to prioritise the investigation, make arrests, and dismantle any criminal networks connected to the killing. The organisation warned that attacks on legal professionals are not isolated events, they are attacks on the constitutional promise that disputes should be resolved peacefully through lawful means.
As the investigation unfolds, the legal fraternity is grappling with the harsh reality that the safety of attorneys may be under threat, particularly those handling sensitive or high-stakes commercial cases.
