Multi-Vehicle Fatal Crash Shuts Down N3 Near Wilge Toll Plaza Amid Heavy Rain
A major fatal collision involving multiple vehicles has brought traffic to a standstill on the N3 near Villiers in the Free State, creating a scene of tragedy and significant disruption on one of the country’s busiest freight routes.
The crash occurred on Monday evening around 7 PM on the southbound carriageway towards Durban, close to the Wilge Toll Plaza. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, are currently on the scene managing the aftermath.
The incident comes amid challenging weather conditions that are severely hampering visibility and road safety. Thania Dhoogra, chief operating officer for N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), confirmed that heavy rainfall is contributing to the dangerous driving environment.
“Road users should be prepared for poor visibility, wet road surfaces, congestion and traffic delays in the area,” Dhoogra stated. She urgently requested that “drivers approach the scene of the crash with extra caution.”
With recovery and cleanup operations underway, motorists can expect significant delays in both directions. Authorities have warned that additional traffic control measures may be implemented as needed.
The N3TC and emergency services have not yet released details regarding the number of vehicles involved or the casualty count. The focus remains on clearing the scene and managing the resulting traffic gridlock under difficult weather conditions.
For those traveling between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, seeking alternative routes is strongly advised, while drivers already on the N3 are urged to exercise extreme patience and caution.
