In a heavily secured courtroom, the two men accused of being the triggermen in the murders of rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane made their first appearance in a South African court on Tuesday. The hearing revealed that the case against them is even more extensive than previously known.

Siyabonga Gezani Ndimande and Malusi Dave Ndimande were extradited from Eswatini and appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court under the watchful eye of KZN Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The proceedings, which began after 3 PM, were attended by Interpol officers and members of the South African Human Rights Commission, a standard procedure for a first appearance.

A Web of Additional Charges

While the brothers are charged with the high-profile February 2023 murders on Florida Road, the state prosecutor, Advocate Lawrence Gcaba, disclosed they are now implicated in two other separate cases.

The first is the murder of William Kunene, a case for which four other people are already in custody. The second involves a six-count charge, including the conspiracy to murder Siyabonga Ngcobo and the murder of Nhlanhla Ngcobo.

This means the Ndimande brothers will be facing a complex web of legal battles beyond the AKA case, painting a picture of alleged involvement in multiple serious crimes.

A Long Road to Trial

The court proceedings were procedural. The brothers were remanded in custody until November 25 to allow them to consult with their legal representatives. They are set to join their five co-accused, who are already in prison after being denied bail.

The scale of the upcoming trial is immense, with dates already set deep into 2026. The first trial block is scheduled from July 20 to August 21, 2026, followed by a second from October 5 to November 6, 2026.

A Mother’s Agonizing Wait

As the legal machinery creaked into motion, a poignant reminder of the human tragedy at the heart of the case came from AKA’s mother, Lynn Forbes. In a social media post, she expressed the profound grief that no court appearance can heal.

“If you were the one coming home today … that would be justice for me. Everyone else is just process,” she wrote. “This South African air is suffocating today … I cannot breathe.”

For the families of the victims, the appearance of the alleged hitmen marks a critical, yet painful, step in a journey toward justice that will still take years to unfold.
