Eleven people arrested in connection with a large-scale drug manufacturing facility on a farm in the North West are due to make their first appearance at the Swartruggens Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning, 15 May 2026, after police uncovered a suspected methamphetamine laboratory during an intelligence operation on Wednesday.

What was found

Police seized large quantities of equipment and chemicals used in drug production, as well as three firearms. Investigators have so far confiscated about 481 kilograms of methamphetamine, which the Hawks say has an estimated street value running into millions of rand. The agency also described the illicit laboratory’s value as exceeding R1 billion. An earlier report from the operation stated an estimated street value of R100 million for narcotics uncovered during the raid.

Who was arrested and the charges

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the arrested group comprises five Mexican nationals, two Mozambican nationals, one Zimbabwean national and three South African citizens, including a woman. The suspects face charges relating to drug manufacturing, illegal possession of precious metals, illegal possession of hazardous materials and contraventions of the Immigration Act.

Investigation and scene processing

Forensic teams are still processing the crime scene. The Hawks indicated that the quantity of meth confiscated may rise once the entire scene has been thoroughly examined. Preliminary investigations described the laboratory as the fourth in South Africa with alleged links to Mexican syndicates.

Property and next steps

Authorities have not located the current owners of the property. The owner’s son and other relatives were among those arrested and are being questioned as the investigation continues. Due to the sensitive nature of the probe, the Hawks said some information cannot be released at this stage.

Court timetable

The suspects are expected to appear at the Swartruggens Magistrate’s Court on 15 May 2026 for their first court appearance. Investigations remain ongoing.
